Capital Electric's Lighting Technology Update Seminars are back and in-person! These popular educational seminars will focus on timely and interesting lighting topics relevant to the present and the future. We will take a fresh look at LED technology, the current state-of-the-art, prospects for improvements, and what the LED industry may look like in the near- future. LED vs. Traditional lighting equivalency has vexed installers and users since LED was introduced. We will tackle this sometimes difficult issue with techniques and tools to help you more easily and accurately select the correct LED for the application. We will also discuss emergency backup capability in lighting installations, a topic that is often poorly understood even though it is almost always a building code requirement.

While there aren’t as many rapid technological advances in LED light sources themselves, the impact from various forces that determine the availability, use, and control of our lighting continue to be felt in very real ways. In this opening presentation, we will discuss subjects such as details the latest Dept. of Energy regulations on general service lamps of all kinds that may affect your lighting options today. We will also update subjects like data through light (Li-Fi), the adoption, or lack thereof, of lighting controls, and an update on human impacts.
LED Lumen & Foot Candle Equivalency: All Lights Are Not Created (and Don’t Perform) Equally
Since the introduction of LED as a general lighting source, all of us have struggled at one time or another, to accurately and consistently determine the correct LED source to replace a traditional lighting application. Lumens, Foot Candles, Surface Reflectance, Fixture Efficiency, and Light Level Depreciation are just some of the things we now need to know to make the right LED choice to replace our old lighting. We’ll explain, in detail, all those terms, what they mean for an accurate LED replacement and how they should inform your decision-making. We’ll do some equivalency exercises and show real-world examples of how it’s done. This is one of the most misunderstood, yet critically important aspects in lighting. This presentation will help ensure you consistently do it right each time.

EXIT, Emergency, and Controls
When the lights go out unexpectedly in a building, we have come to expect the presence of backup and emergency lighting showing the pathway to a clear EXIT. But something we take for granted takes some thought and planning. LED lighting has introduced changes to the hardware and strategies employed for this important safeguard. We will look at emergency and exit lighting in the LED age and why it’s important to understand it better. Then we’ll shift to controls, which can greatly impact the emergency lighting. How do lighting controls influence payback? Can you add controls to LED fixtures previously installed? What about codes? We will cover this and more in this important session.
Special Lighting Applications
We will tackle the subject of lighting applications that require specific fixture criteria to meet a performance, safety, or regulatory requirement. NSF, Explosion Proof, Hazardous Location, IP Rating, and NEMA rating are some of the categories for light sources that are most common. We will look at the types of applications where these certifications are required and why. This is one area where it’s critically important to select the right product for the conditions and the task.
